The Civil Air Navigation Services Organisation (CANSO), the association representing the international air traffic management industry, has confirmed on 3th September 2025 that ROMATSA has achieved Level 3 in its environmental accreditation programme, GreenATM. At the CANSO meeting on 24 September, held on the margins of the ICAO General Assembly, Mr. Adrian Cojoc, Director General of ROMATSA, officially received the accreditation from Mr. Simon Hocquard, CANSO President and CEO.
GreenATM, launched by CANSO in 2022, provides a global framework to measure and guide ANSPs in reducing aviation’s environmental footprint through operational efficiency and sustainable practices. The programme is graded from Level 1, where the operator recognises that the company’s policies can make an effective contribution to reducing environmental impacts, through to Level 5, where strategies are fully implemented, delivering a positive impact on the environmental footprint and the organisation is actively involved in researching and testing innovations.
The GreenATM programme covers a wide range of topics including:
Level 3, ‘Managed’, indicates that ROMATSA’s progress in sustainable aviation has reached a level of maturity in which the active implementation of plans that have an impact on emissions has been demonstrated. This score reflects ROMATSA’s environmental credentials and commitment, showing excellent on-going progress across the programme’s key categories.
ROMATSA scored particularly high in many areas. Its long-standing commitment to research and development, including active participation in SESAR tests, was recognised as exemplary. In Air Traffic Flow Management, ROMATSA demonstrated best practice through its integration with the EUROCONTROL Network Manager. The organisation also excelled in trajectory optimisation with its leadership in implementing cross-border Free Route Airspace. The Flexible Use of Airspace programme and advanced surveillance capabilities also showcased its ability to deliver both operational efficiency and environmental benefits.
Simon Hocquard, CANSO President and CEO, said: “We congratulate ROMATSA on achieving Level 3 accreditation in our GreenATM programme. Their dedication to embedding sustainability into air navigation operations is commendable, and this recognition highlights their leadership in driving efficiency and environmental progress in Europe.”
Marius Adrian COJOC, Director General of ROMATSA, commented: “Receiving Level 3 in CANSO’s GreenATM programme is a significant achievement for us. It demonstrates our commitment to supporting aviation’s sustainability goals and integrating greener practices into every aspect of our work. We will continue to build on this success, working with CANSO and our partners to advance environmental initiatives and deliver benefits for both the industry and society.”
With this accreditation, ROMATSA joins a growing number of ANSPs worldwide that are using the GreenATM framework to benchmark performance, share best practice, and contribute to a more sustainable future for aviation.
